Survival Recipe: High Speed Venison

A Dutch or camp oven and a heat source is all you need to do this recipe!
It was at the end of a several-day backpack elk hunt, and we had just arrived at the trailhead. We were somewhere between the “Food is Fuel” and “Use the Dutch Oven to Cook Something Wonderful” philosophies of wilderness campfire/survival cooking.
So we picked this “High Speed Venison” recipe. My brother, Mike set up the stove and Dutch oven on the tailgate of my pickup; while the venison backstrap and onions were sliced. All this preparation took less than five minutes.
Ingredients for this High Speed Venison dish go on every hunt. All you have to do is add the meat, and you have a great, tasty meal that doesn’t require a lot of preparation. We’ve cooked this same dish in the parking lot of the motel in Orofino, Idaho; outside of a motel room in Lowell, Idaho, at a turnout on Idaho's Lolo Highway and at home, when a quick meal was in order.
